Dodo birds did not fly. They had no natural predators and did not need to fly. Their bones were too dense for flight and they swallowed rocks to aid in digestion, so they were too heavy to take off. Their inability to fly is one of the many reasons that they went extinct so quickly.

There has been much speculation as to why the dodo could not fly. It was quite a heavy bird for its size, around 20kg, and its wings were far too small and rudimentary to support it in flight. Flight was not a requirement for the dodo in its habitat.
