It doesn't make you a bad person, you weren't the one doing anything wrong. As long as it is just a friendship/civil-relationship there is nothing wrong with that. You are just being a civil person and not someone who is creating drama, so actually you just remaining civil/friendly is the best thing to do (that or just staying clear of him and not dealing with him).
