What RAM does is allow more information to be held in memory so the hard drive won't have to be accessed as much. If you are after speed, upgrading the processor chip should help. The question is a little odd. RAM is random access memory. You do need it for a computer to run. It is like asking do wheels make your car run faster. Wheels don't make it run, but you don't run very fast without them.Adding more RAM certainly makes computer faster.

If the question is if adding MORE RAM will increase the computer's speed, it will, some. Or at the least, it will make the computer slow down at a slower rate into your computing session. When the operating system runs out of RAM to use, it will start paging out memory to the hard drive, and that is slower than RAM. In Windows 7, and perhaps other Windows versions, when you run low on memory, even internet access slows down.

In some cases, another way that additional RAM speeds thing up is when the machine uses multiple memory channels and not all of the separate channels are in use. Some machines can access multiple memory sticks at the same time, and if you only have one memory stick, it cannot do that. So when you fill out the additional channel(s), the machine will detect this and use a wider data path to the memory.

it depends on what you mean by (what i assume you mean) "to make faster" for instance getting a better CPU will not help you if your video card is the problem it depends on what you use your computer for if you use it for editing or gaming then yes ram will probably help you alot in conjunction with a video card good mobo and a nice CPU and fast hard drive speed.
