No, i would not send a card. but I would at least call them and say thank you, a card is too much, but a phone call shows that you care!

It's not necessary, but it's a nice touch to thank people for supporting you when you were in hospital ill. If you had a baby in hospital then you don't need to send thank you notes.
A really neat thing to do is take a picture of the person as they open the gift that was received. Then have that picture placed on the front of your thank you card. Otherwise choose a picture that goes along with the theme of the party or ceremony.

The latter. You don't thank someone for something you haven't yet received. However, a verbal thank you at the time of the promise is appropriate.
