Crime can and DOES cause poverty-sometimes immediately and at times in the long run. For example, if the only breadwinner of a household, who has no life policy or insurance that would "sustain" her loved ones, where to be murdered-A CRIME- what would become of those people? Financial status will drastically decrease and this decrease will lead to poverty. Also, (national/governmental) fraud may lead to poverty. The fraud affects the state's economy adversely and as a means to try and combat these effects the level inflation is bound or most likely to increase. Now what about the poor man who had to make means to just buy a loaf of bread that cost him R7.50? If that very loaf will now be sold at R10.50+ what then? Will he not starve? These are just mere simple examples of how crime can and does cause poverty as opposed to poverty causes crime.
Well some would call it crimes but the only reason that it is called a crime is because people are doing what it takes to survive and they don't follow the stupid regulations that the government sets.
one answer:
Crime would always exist in some form or the other. Now if somebody is poor, he does have money to get educated; and if he does not get education, he does not have any sense of law or any other degree to get a job, as a result he commits crime. So does poverty foster crime- well yes!
another answer:
I disagree with the first answer. While it is true that there has always been crime, poverty is only one factor. There are many poor people who do not commit any crimes nor break the law. Poverty certainly does lead some people to feel hopeless and frustrated, and such people may indeed turn to crime. But not every poor person reacts this way. Some find mentors, to help them get a better education and learn some marketable skills. Some find that even though they may go to a below-average school, they can still make the best of it and then get scholarships to college.
As I said, crime is caused by a number of factors-- many criminals are addicted to drugs, for example, and they steal to support their addiction. There are not enough treatment programs to help addicts get off of drugs, and locking them up doesn't teach them better coping strategies for when they get out. Other criminals are just greedy and commit crimes because they want expensive items without paying for them. So, rather than just saying that poverty fosters crime, it is probably more accurate to say that poverty can produce conditions that make crime more attractive-- if there are no jobs and no positive activities in a neighborhood, joining a gang might seem like a good way to spend time. But the vast majority of poor people would rather have a chance to succeed, and they do not want to live a life of criminal behavior.

Crime in Nigeria, is originated from poverty.
Poverty can foster crime by creating conditions of desperation and lack of opportunities, leading individuals to resort to illegal means to survive. Limited access to education, healthcare, and employment can contribute to a sense of hopelessness among those in poverty, making them more susceptible to criminal activities as a means of addressing their needs. Additionally, high levels of poverty can increase social inequality and feelings of resentment and frustration, which may lead to an increase in criminal behavior.
