The baby can only get the chemicals in the smoke if he/she inhales it, which he/she wont after she has stopped smoking the cigarette. You can always ask her to wash her hands after.
Smoking during pregnancy has been linked to several things. When a woman is pregnant and smoking she increases the risk of miscarriage, having an ectopic pregnancy, high blood pressure problems, placenta previa, placental abruption, labor complications, and preterm labor. Babies born to mothers who smoke have lower birthrates, asthma, increased rate of ear infections, bronchitis/ pnuemonia, increased risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), and hyperactivity. It is important to remember that not only smoking but being around second hand smoke and third hand smoke is harmful to a woman and her baby. As a side not cigarette smoke remains in a room for 14 days after each cigarette is smoked.
