Sodium choride is a salt, therefore it has an ionic bond.
When a metal (such as sodium) and a non-metal (such as chlorine) form a compound, you would assume that they make an ionic bond since their electro negativity would be very different.
When two non-metals form a bond (such as dihydrogen monoxide) it would normally be in a covalent bond, and they would be categorized as molecules.

∙ 15y agoSodium chloride (NaCl) is an ionic substance. Therefore, there are no simple, discreet molecules of sodium chloride (or of other ionic solids for that matter). A sample of NaCl is instead made up of a lattice held together by strong ionic bonds. The formula NaCl is merely the simplest stochiometric ratio for the ionic crystal, which contains one Na atom for every Cl atom.

∙ 11y agoNo. NaCl is an ionic compound and does not form molecules. It forms a crystal lattice in which every ion is surrounded by six ions of opposite charge. The formula NaCl is a formula unit which gives the simplest whole number ratio of ions in the compound.
