No. There is no gradation system in Tai Chi. You can win competitions though. In some schools there is a sash system. It usually is three, one that is worn by students, yellow, one that is worn by an instructor, red, and one worn by the master, black.

How can tai chi help defend yourself?

The best source is your instructor. S/he can show you the application of the moves in a combat situation. Tai chi is an art of fluidity and a good self defense skill. because tai chi is known for its fluidity, brutal straight on attacks doesn't work on the user (if they know how to use tai chi). is like hitting water. Tai chi 2nd defense skill is its healing ability during combat. this is no joke or fiction. the fluid movement of the body allows you to minimize the pain by transferring the attack to throughout the body. Wwhen you hit water, the water transfer the energy from your attacks to throughout the water body. Tai chi attacks are normally hard yet soft (like a whip). It all depends on the user. Tai chi could be useless if the user is not committed into it. Tai chi requires a lot of patient.

Is tai chi different to tai chi chun?

Tai-chi (meaning "The Grand Ultimate Way of Life") refers to Taoist philosophy and to the healing system based on that philosophy. This includes acupressure massage, acupuncture, herbal medicine and chi-gung (health exercises based on the flow of internal energy or "chi"). Tai-chi-Chuan is the self defense system, now used as an exercise system, developed about 800 years ago by Chang, San-feng. He was the leading martial arts champion of his time but was also involved in healing within a system known as Taoist Alchemy. He wanted to use the principles of healing in his martial arts and also use martial arts to teach healing. Tai-chi-Chuan ("The Grand Ultimate Martial Art") was the result. Today this system consists of slow forms (series of movements), emphasizing the fluidity of movement, aerobic and acrobatic forms such as animal forms, various types of chi-gung (such as zookinesis, a modern term meaning animal exercises), Push Hands (a two person exercise teaching principles of interaction with another person) and sparring (full contact fighting). A school of Tai-chi-Chuan would teach the entire range of practices, including healing, exercise and self defense. A school of Tai-chi might only teach a form or some simple chi-gung exercises. It is important to learn the lineage of your teacher to make sure that he or she has had legitimate training. Contact the oldest living representative of that lineage and ask if they know of your particular teacher and his competence.

How is tai chi used?

Tai chi chuan is a martial art. It is practiced by thousands of people in China and throughout the world. The focus is the practice of specific forms that strengthen the body, stretch it out and improve the flow of chi through the body. A good instructor will also know, and may teach, the use of the motions in self defense.
