AnswerNo, it has a timing chain, or at least my 98 Altima GLE does, and its pretty sturdy too. I currently have 204,000 miles on it, and its still working as it should.

Not that I would recommend letting it go that far. Those are mostly 55 MPH highway miles with religious 3000 mile oil changes. I think the general consensus is replace it at 150k.

Otherwise, its not a big deal. When it needs to be replaced, it will start to rattle loudly and performance will degrade. It pretty much lets you know, giving you a short amount of time to plan a repair.

There's some history behind the belt/chain confusion. There was a forum thread about it written by a mechanic a while back that ranked high in the search engines and he said it had a belt and not a timing chain. Later on in the thread he corrected himself, but most folks wouldn't read that far.
