the charging cradle is just for more comfortable charging you don't need it for charging but its more safe and much more comfortable, and if you mean while the 3ds charging yes the cradle need to be plugged in with the charger so he can get electricity.

∙ 11y agono, you can't but you can buy the nyko power pak+ for the 3DS which make the 3DS battery doubles itself and you can buy the cradle that charges the 3DS without any wires. i have it and i very recommend it.
