Sludge in an engine is cause by poor maintenance. Air and contaminants build up over time to create a thick sludge throughout the engine.

Yes! After only 87,000km and at least 12 oil changes my engine quit on me. I had the car towed to the local GM dealer, only to find out a few days later that the engine had sludge in both the upper and lower engine. I was also advised that GM would not warranty the engine because of the sludge. I bought this car thinking it would be much better than the usual GM product, because of the Toyota engine...but was I wrong! I am presently compliling several complaints from Toyota and Pontiac owners about this problem. It seems that Toyota have have had engine design flaws that contributed to the sludge problem (engine running to hot, oil filter positionning, etc..). I have most of my maintenance records and still GM does not want to cover the motor on warranty. If you have any other information about this problem, could you forward the info? -------- I had the valve cover off mine at 100K miles, definitely no sludge problem in there. Also, among the Vibers at forums.genvibe.com, there have not been any reported sludge problems

You are aware of the sludge problem VW has been having and that you are to use synthetic oil in all there turbo charged engines along with a larger filter.They extended the warranty because of this problem but only if you have all your oil change reciepts.The sludge build up clogs the oil pickup and starves youe engine of oil and is seizes.Google this vw sludge problem and you will see it is quite a problem .Hope this isn't what your problem is but it sounds like it.

I am a ASE certified master technician with 30 years of professional auto repair experience. The first thing I would suggest regarding noisy lifters is to make sure the engine oil pressure is to spec, this can only be done with a oil pressure gauge screwed into the oil pressure sending unit passage. If the oil pressure is to spec hot and cold then it may be caused by sludge build up, if it is sludge there are some tricks of the trade to clean sludge but you would have to determine the extent of sludge build up before treating the problem, a engine flush could be dangerous to the life of the engine if the sludge is extreme as all of that sludge will end up in the pan and may plug the oil pick up screen causing loss of oil pressure, removing a valve cover is one way to determine if sludge is the issue.

I have a 2001 1.8 Turbo Passat. I believe the white smoke is due to the engine sludge problem that had a recall on it (I missed the mileage cut off for a new engine). Sludge builds up on the Catalytic Converter. After a certain amount of build up and the temperature of the Cat is at normal temperature, white smoke will come out of tail pipe when accelerating. When it starts, the engine will shake slightly and sound strained. I try to gently continue my acceleration until the sludge is cleared (white smoke stops). Changing the oil frequently helps. The reason the car cuts out is becasue of a build up of sludge in the breather pipe on the bottom of the air box, to solve this problem, remove the top of the air filter (located on the top of the engine) will be about 8 screws, lift up the box to show the carb, one of the pipes connecting to the air box will have a yellow sludge in it, remove as much as possile, look up the pipe on the bottom of the air filter, this too will have some sludge, once these have both been cleaned the problem will be solved!!!!The sludge is formed becasue of the amount of shortish journeys being made in the car meaning the engine is not clearing enough waste out properlyAlso it is a good idea to run a treatment of REDEX through the system to give it a good clear out.

Only if the engine has low miles or no sludge build up - synthetic oil captures the carbon within its molecules and if there is to much carbon buildup (sludge) it will release the carbon into the molecules of the synthetic oil and run it through the engine - once the filter is bypassing there is nothing to keep the "liquid sandpaper" from wiping out the bearings.
