Does the Remington sportsman 74 have the same problems as the 742 woodmaster?

The Sportsman 74 is the K-Mart version of the Remington 7400. Internally they are the same. Properly maintained the 7400 is a fine rifle, so the Sportsman 74 should be the same. Both the 7400 and the Sportsman 74 have different internal rail guides that the bolt travels on than the 742 had. Those had been an issue with the 742.

www.remington.com or I have ordered a barrel for an 878 in 1983 from Remington Arms Co. Inc, Ilion, N.Y. 13357. It cost about $110 back then. Also received an owners manual with original advertising for the same gun from; Remington Arms Co. Inc., 870 Remington Drive, PO Box 700, Madison, N.C. 27025-0700 I think you can get about anything off of their web page though so I would try that first.

Made by Remington in 1985 &1986; 28" or 30" vented rib barrel with various chokes; basicly same gun as the 870 Express model; most if not all 870 parts are interchangable. Should probably hold value comparable to the Remington 870 Express model which retails close to $400.00 after taxes.

Just go to their site and request an outdated firearms manual. And to answer your question about assembly, you have to unscrew the knurled knob at the end of the magazine under the barrel. If you can't move it, use pliers, but be sure to cushion the teeth with some heavy cloth to prevent damaging the knob. Good Luck
