No. Only if the person that is Mormon became Catholic before he/she got engaged. Mormonism is considered paganism by the Catholic Church and its baptisms are declared dubious and invalid since Mormonism does not recognize the Divine Trinity of God as three equal persons in one Godhead. Hence the necessary baptismal intention is absent even though the matter and form of the Mormon practice are correct. Since Catholics cannot validly marry anyone who is not at least validly baptized, Catholics may not enter into the marriage contract with a Mormon.

I guess that depends on whether the Mormon considers themselves a Catholic or a Mormon, and what kind of ceremony you are planning on.

I don't know what the rules are about getting married in a Catholic ceremony, but I believe only one member of of the couple must be Catholic. That doesn't seem to be a problem since the Mormon was also baptised Catholic.

If the Mormon considers themselves Mormon and not Catholic, they may want a Temple wedding, in which case they can only marry another Mormon. If they would like to be married outside the temple, they can be married inside a Mormon church by a Bishop no matter what religion the other member of the couple is. He will perform the ceremony and provide use of the church building for free, which is a plus.

if a religious ceremony is not important to you or is going to cause a lot of problems, you might want to consider a civil cermony by a justice of the peace or hired non-denominational minister.

A Catholic Response to the First Answer

Catholics are required to be married in the Catholic Church with a Catholic priest conducting the ceremony. A Mormon wedding is not an option for a Catholic, nor is a civil ceremony (alone)* an option for a Catholic.

_______________

* in some European countries, the civil state refuses to recognize any weddings conducted by the clergy; couples are forced to undergo two separate ceremonies in order to be (a) legally married, and (b) religiously married.

ANSWER: and . . .the Mormon spouse would be required to consent to raise the children Catholic. That is a non-negotiable which could become a very serious impediment to a marriage between a Mormon & a Catholic. However, he was baptized Catholic so unless he formally severed himself -- excommunication -- from the Catholic Church, he remains a Catholic, just a non-practicing/"fallen-away" one.

Legally, yes. Religiously it is questionable. Catholics are typically not allowed to marry someone who is not Catholic if they are married by a priest inside the Church. If they want to marry elswhere, they can, but pious Catholics may disapprove.

Mormons may marry whomever they want, but are encouraged to marry people from the same religion to avoid dischord in the marriage relationship.

Catholics are actually not supposed to marry outside of the church, but it's not a tightly followed tradition.

Roman Catholic Answer: A marriage between a Catholic and a baptised Christian who is not Catholic is commonly called a mixed marriage and is forbidden by Church law. When there is danger to the faith of the Catholic or the children it is forbidden by Divine Law itself. In some cases a dispensation may be obtained from the Bishop, certain conditions must be met in order to not endanger the faith of the Catholic.

Mormon Answer: Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) may marry someone of another religion if they choose, but they are encouraged to marry within the religion in order to prevent religion-related problems in the marriage relationship.

The Catholic Church recognizes a marriage performed by a Mormon clergy as a legal marriage, and will generally recognize it as a religious marriage if the Catholic member of the couple gets special dispensation. You will have to speak with your priest to get details.

Both the Catholic Church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) encourage their members to marry within their faith. However, it is quite common in both churches to marry people of other religions. It is discouraged, but it is allowed. Depending on where you want the wedding to take place, you may have some issues. If you want to get married in a Catholic church, you will need to talk to your priest and see if he is willing to perform an interfaith wedding. Mormon bishops will marry anyone in a Mormon church, whether they are Mormon or not. However, if a Mormon wants their wedding to be in a Temple and not a church, they will have to marry another Mormon.

Yes. Both Catholics and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) are encouraged to marry members of their own faith, but Mormons and Catholics can and do marry.

Any bride and groom, regardless of their religious faith, may choose to hold their ceremony and/or reception in a Mormon church with the ceremony performed by a Mormon bishop (all free of charge) if they agree to follow certain guidelines regarding the use of the building. (no candles, no alcoholic drinks, etc)

Mormons believe that couples should ideally be married in the Temple, so that their union will be sealed in the eternities rather than "till death do us part", however this is only possible if they are marrying a member of their own faith. Mormons choosing to marry outside the faith (i.e. to a Catholic) can be married in their church building or in any other place, by anyone with the legal authority to do so.

Yes, but it is something that you will want to discuss with your priest. I know many Catholics who are married to Mormons, but most of them married outside of either church. Both the Catholic church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recommend marriage within their respective faiths, but allow interfaith marriages with a few stipulations.

The Catholic/Mormon couples I know of that chose a Catholic church ceremony did have to attend classes given by their priest and the Mormon had to agree that they would allow their children to be baptized and raised Catholic (if the Catholic spouse wanted them to be) and allow the Catholic spouse to attend Mass.

Catholic/Mormon couples wishing to marry in a Mormon church by a Mormon bishop may also do so. They will have to meet with the Bishop so that he can get to know them. However, they cannot be married in a Mormon Temple (different from a regular church) unless the Catholic spouse converts and is a fully practicing Mormon for at least one year. The difference is that Mormons believe a marriage that takes place in the temple will be continue for eternity in heaven, while a church marriage (or any other marriage outside of a temple) is only "until death do you part".

While most Catholic/Mormon marriages work just fine, you may want to consider that you may feel pressure from your spouse's family or congregation to convert to their faith, if you have children they may not believe the same as you, and you or your spouse may feel that your wedding was 'inferior' or be disappointed that it was not what you were raised to imagine a wedding should be. Be sure that you and your relationship can handle these extra issues that arise in interfaith marriages.

Is it okay to marry a Mormon and let your kids be Mormon if you are Catholic?

No, if you are a true believer of the Catholic faith, it is important to you to marry a Catholic, so that your marriage can be sanctified the the Church, and so that your children can grow up as Catholics. Likewise, if your intended is a true believer of the Mormon faith, it is important for him or her to marry a Mormon, so that his or her marriage can be sealed in the temple, and so that his or her children can be born in the covenant. However, if neither of you place this kind of value on your respective religions then there is no problem at all.
