Using MAX A/C is best for your gas mileage as it re-circulates the air and does not have to continuously keep cooling fresh, moisture filled air. Once the air has cooled the a/c compressor does not have to work as hard anymore to keep the car cooled and, if you have an auto climate control feature, it turn off until the inside warms above your temp setting on the thermostat thus saving fuel.

If it were not on MAX, the compressor would run continuously attempting to cool air that is being drawn from the outside.
