No they dont. they change shells once they are uncomfortable with their shells and theyre getting bigger . their shells are like clothes we wear. if it gets smaller we find a more larger one :)
On the contrary, where a hermit crab lives affects the type of shell it lives in. A hermit crab finds their shell in their environment, therefore where they live will influence the color of the shell they find in that environment.
If a hermit crab dies, it may eventually turn a different color as it decomposes or molds, but often it will look the same only dead. If you notice your crab looking a different color, it may need to molt (shed it's old skin to grow new) or may have just molted. After a molt they are often lighter and shinier for a little while while their new skin grows harder and darker.
Water dose effect wear they live because the water evaporates and it will moist wear they live
If your land hermit crab's shell gets to small get a new shell. The shell hole should be the same size as your crab's big claw or bigger Make sure your crab's new shell is clean. DO NOT FORCE YOU CRAB TO COME OUT! All you have to do is set your crab's new shell in it's cage and wait.
Congratulations! No need to rename it. It's the same hermit crab. It molted it's old skin! This means your hermit crab is perfectly healthy and can grow! Make sure you have a slightly bigger shell though. Leave it alone until it walks around and is very healthy.
The land hermit crab has a big claw and a small claw. The ocean hermit crab's claw's are the same size.
You will know when your hermit crab is about to die because it will not move in the shell. When it is not moving it starts to fall out of its shell. Like my hermit crabs 2 of them died and now I only have 1. The first and second one did the same thing of course but they both fell out. You also know when a hermit crab dies, when they a pale or there skin is different. They will not hide into there shell at all. Hopefully your hermit crabs are in good health like mine were!!!
Like all shell-bearing creatures, a hermit crab also sheds its shell when it has grown too big to fit it. In the place of the old shell, a new shell has already started growing. The hermit crab has a very soft abdomen or 'tail' as it is generally referred to. It is folded under the body. Nevertheless the shell of the hermit crab does not protect its tail as is the case with all other crabs. After shedding its old shell, the hermit crab keeps the empty shell with itself taking full utility of it as a portable shelter, which could come in handy, if it has to fight with another crab for a more attractive home. This leads to situations sometimes where the homeseeker crab actually succeeds in kicking the original homeowner out of the home and instead eats it up and takes over the shell. The claws of the hermit crab are not equal in size. One of the claws is always bigger than the other one. Having a spiral shaped abdomen, the hermit crab moves in and out of the shell with a stride that is virtually spiral. Well, hermit crabs look like a crab in a shell. they have 2 claws, one big one for defence, one small one for scavenging or eating.they have antenea that shoot around like an insects if the animal is healthy.4 legs I think all around the same size.
probably not. but, you can always use your hermit crab as a guinnea pig for the rest of civilization wondering the same thing, then report back to us!
Hermit crabs need a shell because inside of the their shell is their soft tail or body. It needs it's shell because other hermit crabs can hurt or damage their tail or body that's inside of the shell. Hermit crabs will always be in a shell. The only time when they aren't in a shell is that quick few seconds when they change shells into a bigger one to grow. If your hermit crab is running around without it's shells there is something wrong with your crab. Go to the Mall of America (Nickaloden Universe) what ever you want to call it and ask the person why. I bet he can help you.
Yes, hermit crabs don't usually fight. You could give the new hermit crab a bath so that it smells the same as the other hermit crab in you tank.
yes
My 1st land hermit crab was bestfriends with my little Mandarin Crab (both need almost same exact conditions in the tank) ((Mandarin Crab needs half land, half water so i added a fish bowl for him)) they lived in a 5 gallon crabitat and everytime i lifted up the little coconut shell, they were together
They both are crabs right?
It's nekky! It's the same as you taking off your pants. Except a crab without a shell for long will most likely die. You could go without pants for the rest of your life without dieing.
