Watermelon grows where there is adequate water and a fertile but sandy soil and while everyone should be pleased that California has a long growing season and does provide excellent produce before and late into the growing season no one, and that is No One and I mean Absolutely No One can produce a Black Diamond Melon like they do in Oklahoma. Once tried at its peak it invites, NO, it absolutely demands a repeat performance. There are signature products that seem to only be absolutely perfect when grown in a certain specific environment. The Santa Rosa Plum is an absolute winner and the sweet lemons from near Oceanside are a genuine treat. If you are in the market for a Cantloupe no one and that means absolutely nobody can match Rocky Ford Colarado. If you want watermelon they are grown in numerous locations, some places produce an excellent product but they pale when compared to the Real McCoy.

Yes. [1] Watermelon's native to South Africa. It was discovered by the exploring missionary Dr David Livingstone in the Kalahari Desert. And that's where it most likely originated. [2] Therefore, it's a warm-season crop. So it needs long growing seasons. Specifically, it needs four frost-free months, and soil temperatures of 21-29 degrees C/70-85 degrees F. [3] Forty-four states grow watermelons. And Arizona is in the top five with California, Florida, Georgia, and Texas.
