It was to put an end to the war. Clearly the bombs did not destroy the earth, or even come close. Whether you agree with the use of the bombs or not, their use almost surely reduced the total number of casualties. Had MacArthur engaged in a ground war in Japan, the fighting would have continued for a very long time, and at the cost of many, many lives. There is still (as there should be) debate over the wisdom of using those bombs, but I can at least suggest that there are good arguments in support of their having been used.
