In photolysis, the solar energy absorbed by the chloroplasts is used to split water into hydrogen ions (H+) and oxygen gas. Two water molecules are consumed for every four electrons transferred to a photosystem. The solar energy/ electrons that are captured by the pigments in the photosystems are then used to form additional stable energy-rich molecules and to make ATP from ADP and Pi.
