One of the most apprehensive times in a woman's life can be during the period in which she is unsure whether or not she is pregnant. A number of reasons exist for why a woman may feel that she has undergone the conception process and is in the early stages of pregnancy, some accurate indicators and others a bit more fallible. Here are a few of the symptoms that a woman should look for during the early phases of confirming a possible pregnancy:

Missed Period

A missed period is one of the biggest indicators and one of the most common symptoms of a pregnancy. This occurs when an embryo has implanted in the uterus, causing hormones to be produced that tell the body to stop menstruating and begin making the changes that will support the growth of a fetus. This is not always a fool-proof indicator, as a change in health, diet, or stress factors can also cause menstruation to become sporadic or to skip altogether.

Breast Changes

Due to initial hormonal changes, the breasts can become swollen and tender. Additionally, the area around the nipples, the areola, can increase in circumference and also become a darker pigment. It is thought that the darkening takes place to make it easier for a newborn to locate the nipple for early breastfeeding.

Implantation Cramping

Occasionally, women will experience a cramping sensation accompanied by light spotting or temporary bleeding. This occurs when the fertilized egg burrows into the uterus and disturbs the lining of the uterus.

Fatigue

Fatigue is a common symptom as the body is working overtime to create a habitable environment for the developing fetus. However, since fatigue can be caused by a number of factors including illness and stress, it is not a good primary indicator of pregnancy.

Increased Urination

The sudden increase in blood volume causes the kidneys and bladder to work overtime to expel wastes and accommodate the increased volume of fluids. This combined with the added pressure of an expanding uterus within the pelvic region contributes to frequent urination.

These symptoms are not mutually exclusive and can occur in any combination, but sometimes not at all. The most effective way to confirm a pregnancy is by a pregnancy test confirmed by a medical professional.
