The political effects of World War 1 on Europe were many, but here are some basic ones:

1) It affirmed that Great Britain and France were still the strongest of the European countries.

2) It caused the Russian Revolution of 1917.

3) It ended the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

4) It created the nation of Yugoslavia.

----

World War 1 created the first communist nation.

It varied, also by country. The "Roaring Twenties" certainly were a reaction to WW 1, but although several Empires fell, its social structure-effects differed. On the side of the losers:

  • Russia was affected most. the Communist Revolution that was a result of WW 1 turned its society completely upside down and until 1925 a civil war would rage through the country.
  • Germany had to sign the Versailles Treaty after WW 1 and its provisions especially threw Germany in social and economic turmoil which proved extremely difficult to get out of. The result was that the Germans completely lost faith in the effectiveness of democratic governments and were an easy prey for the ascending Nazi Party.
  • Austria lost most of its territories and saw the end of Hapsburg rule, but it social structure remained largely intact.

On the side of the winners of WW 1 (and in the countries that had remained neutral) the social structure was least affected. There, major changes would only come about after WW 2.

Europe was in debt with U.S., owing millions. Germany had limits of how big their armies could be, and it lost a chunk of land. Other borders were changed too, and new nations were formed.

The major effect of World War 1 on Europe was economic recession. This was caused by great war spending and labor crises due to loss of the working class in war casualties.
