1. Problems with emissions control. Rotary engines use direct oil injection and this means oil is constantly burning with the fuel.

2. Economies of scale. Due to the complex nature of rotary engines very difficult to repair in relation to piston engines and very few people are trained to maintain and build these engines

3. Fuel consumption. Rotary engines are notoriously expensive to run on fuel.

4. Lack of low down torque/driveability. Rotary engines makes a tremendous amount of power at high RPM but insignificant torque in the lower rev ranges.

5. Ignorance. If more people disregard all of the above and eventually get to drive a rotary powered for for a while, they'd be converted. Unfortunately almost all rotary owners are petrolheads and adrenalin junkies!

There are several safety, aerodynamic, and practical reasons why engines are mounted in the front of the wings and a few are... A) As aircraft get larger so do the engines in most cases. Mounting an engine directly below the wing poses ground clearance issues. A plane higher off the ground means longer landing gear, and thus added weight. B) A safety issue is another with engines directly under the wing. Although extremely rare, uncontained engine failures do occur, and when they do debris is ejected from the engine at incredible speeds. Because fuel is stored in the wings this increases the possibility of a fuel tank breach and/or the loss of critical flight controls and systems. C) The location of the engines also provides wing flutter resistance, as well as limiting the bending of the wing during normal phases of flight. The engines also make it possible to make a wing thinner, and lighter increasing weight savings.
