King Harold II was decisively defeated at The Battle of Hastings in 1066 at the hands of Duke William II of Normandy.
Harold was an Anglo-Saxon king crowned shortly after the death of childless king, Edward the Confessor. His brother, Tostig, the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada, and William of Normandy plagued his reign with invasions. Harold II defeated by Tostig and Harald of Norway at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in September 1066; while Harold II and his forces were recovering, William invaded the shores of southern England just three days later.
The battle took place on October 14, 1066 near Hastings in present-day East Sussex. It is estimated that William had 10,000 men and Harold had 7,000. While the English put up a strong fight, once Harold died late, his leaderless forces began to collapse and flee. William was eventually crowned King of England on Christmas Day, 1066 in Westminster Abbey, London.
