The answer is "negative feedback", which is what provides stability in many other situations as well. In this case, if the fusion is too fast, the Sun gets hotter, expands... and the fusion gets slower. Similarly, if the fusion is too slow, the Sun will cool down, contract, and the fusion gets faster again. In summary, any deviation from a point of equilibrium will result in a tendency to go back to equilibrium.

∙ 9y agoThe force exerted outwards by fusion of the star equals the force of Gravity (inward force), making the star stable for many years, until negligible amount of hydrogen is left (fused into heavier elements).

Two opposing forces are at play, the outward force of these continuous reactions and the immense force of gravity which pulls inwards. These are in balance, giving the sun it's overall size, but as the star nears the end of it's life, the size changes to to changes in these forces.
