The geographic position of Rome contributed to its security and its expansion. Being inland from the Mediterranean Sea, shielded Rome from surprise sea attacks. This security was enhanced by building a seaport on the Tiber River where it empties into the Mediterranean Sea. The city was surrounded by seven hills which also helped for security in the early days of Rome. Later as Rome expanded, it found itself in the middle of the Mediterranean which was perfect for administrating areas to the east and west of the Italian Peninsula. Rome's proximity to Sicily and its conquest gave Rome access to control shipping across the Mediterranean Sea.

The rise of ancient Rome as a civilization, and a successful one at that, was influenced by its geographical location. With seven hills and the Tiber River at its center, Rome was both defensible and well-placed for trade, which was a necessity for survival and flourishing alike. Located in the center of the Italian peninsula and adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea, Rome was also well-placed to make conquests in all directions while at the same time was forced to prepare itself for attacks from all directions, as well. Geography helped Rome to develop the war-like character that would enable it eventually to conquer the ancient world.

it was a peninsula, surrounded by water. That made sailing easier, which made trading and transportation overseas easier also because Italy was surrounded by mountains and seas, Rome did not face as many invading nomads/empires as some other societies like Mesopotamia
