The Territory of Louisiana was the other part of the Louisiana purchase that became the State of Arkansas and everything North of that. (The land north of Lake Ponchartrain and east of the Mississippi River was known as "West Florida" and was owned at the time by Great Britain.)

Thomas Jefferson did not personally explore any new territories. However, as President of the United States, he sponsored the Lewis and Clark expedition, which explored and mapped the western portion of the United States, including the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase territory.
