Does a double bass have the biggest bow?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Of the modern orchestral strings, the string bass or double bass has the largest bow, but not the longest. While the wooden part of the bow is much larger (nearly twice the diameter) of a violin bow, and the hair "ribbon" is wider and thicker with heavier hair, the violin bow is longer.

The bass bow is heavier because it needs to have more weight behind it to move the heavy strings on the bass. It is short because the player does not bend his arm like the smaller instruments, and has a smaller range of motion across the strings. This is not a big problem, because the dynamics of bowing let the bass player move the bow more slowly across the strings and thus can get just as long a note as violinists can with their longer bows.

Is an electric double bass better than an acoustic double bass?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

For starters, a standard guitar has six strings, while a bass guitar usually has only four (there are five and even six-string models for advanced styles.) Regarding the sound and role of the instruments, the guitar is in a higher register than the bass guitar, and is more commonly used as the lead instrument in a band than the bass (there are some exceptions to this). The bass guitar, as the name suggests, is in a lower register and is most frequently part of the rhythm section of a band. Again, many genres of music do incorporate bass leads, such as funk (Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers), Alternative/Metal (Les Claypool of Primus) and jazz fusion (Jaco Pastorius) styles.

An electric bass guitar is simply a bass with the electronic anatomy of an electric guitar. Like a six-string electric guitar, an electric bass guitar uses magnetic pickups to "pick up" the vibrations created by the strings and send the sound signal to an amplifier. Effects may also be used to alter the sound quality of the signal.

Well a bass has a low sound electric has to be played with an amp and guitar acoustic can be played any where

In theory a bass and a guitar both have a vital role in a band and even though the guitar is looked up to more by people do not let this put you of learning the bass, as there are way too many guitar players to bassists ratio.

What country does the double bass come from?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

THE original bass guitar was developed bu Paul Tutmarc in the 1930s as a replacement for the double bass, but he received little success for the invention. In the 1950's Leo Fender (who, obviously, is the man who strated Fender. Doesn;t have anything to do with it any more but that's another story) took the idea and produced the first mass produced bass guitar on the market; the precision bass. This was hugely popular and since bass guitars have become the norm in all bands, and variations upon the precision and still made and extremely popular.

What sound does a double bass make?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Double bass, also known as the upright bass, string bass, or contrabass, is used in orchestras and is the lowest pitched string instrument in an orchestra. It is played upright, while it is resting on the ground as the neck (the part where you place your fingers) extends past the head. It is tuned in fourths unlike the violin, which is tuned in fifths, and is used for numerous genres not only for classical, but for jazz, bluegrass, blues, and more.

How does a double bass work?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Answer

A bass guitar fuctions in the same way that all types of electric guitars do. The only thing that differentiates a bass guitar from a stardard electric guitar is the number of strings and the thickness of those strings.

Electric guitars (including bass guitars) are plugged into an amp. One end of the cord is plugged into the guitar, and the other end is plugged into an amp. Electricity goes through this cord and into the pickups of the guitar. (Pickups are the the raised-up things found on the body of the guitar under the strings at the part of the guitar where the strings are picked.) The electricity in the pickups creates an electro-magnetic field that senses the string movement and literally "picks up" the sound. The pickups sense the sound waves and send the message of those waves back through the guitar and down the cord again. This message goes into the amp and produces the audiable sound that you hear.

What does the double bass in the classical orchestra do?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The double bass is the lowest part in the string section of a symphony orchestra. It is usually the lowest part in chamber orchestras as well, if there is no double-bass the lowest part will be played by the cellos.

(Do not confuse this with a basso-continuo, which is a harpsichord part in Baroque era (1600-1750) music.)

1/4 size - It measures 37.4 inches and is the smallest of the double bass. This is the size that's recommended for children. 1/2 size - It measures 40.2 inches and will be suitable for older children to adults who are around five feet four inches in height. 3/4 size - It measures 43.7 inches and is the size most commonly used by musicians. 4/4 size - It measures 45.7 inches and is the largest size of the double bass. Few players are capable of playing this size but some claim that it sounds better than the smaller double bass.

If you want to play the double bass, the first factor you must consider is how tall you are. Yes, your height matters when it comes to the double bass. The taller you are or the bigger your frame, the more easily you can handle playing the double bass. Generally, the size of the double bass that is commonly used is 3/4. Here are the different sizes of the double bass based on its body height (measurement from bottom to shoulder). Note that these are only approximate measurements.

What is a good metal double bass pedal?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

real personal thing for each drummer individually but here are my points on that.

Almost every drummer cranks springs on their pedals so that's the major factor in playing fast double bass.Just from the physics standpoint it's easier to hit the surface when the rebound from spring is there. Also your technique(lifting whole leg/playing using only ankles or combination of both), basshead tension(looser gives more lowend while reducing the response of your pedals/tighter obviously produces more rebound even with loose springs but also makes your bassdrum sound much higher and longer though this could be solved with few towels) and sitting position or your throne height affect the speed, power and thus the feel and settings of your pedal. Other bits include beater height and angle: in order to play loud you should put beaters relatively high and have them angled at 45 degree angle. From that point as you'll be playing you can twitch them up or down by your preferance. By the time your playing skills will improve, you'll figure out specific adjustments that'll be comfy.

What are the special features of the double bass?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The physical fatures of a bass consist of the body (main part) the neck (where the frets are) and the head (the small shape on top of the neck), upon which are machine heads, used to tune the bass (these are the knobs coming off the side. Back down to the body and there is the pick-guard which is usually made of plastic. There are aslo the pickups which carry the sound to the jack- which is where you plug in the amp lead.

The musical fautures is a different question. The bass has a low sound and is used in bands to help keep the rythym, working very closely with the drummer. Whilst the guitarists go showing off the bass is responsible for keeping the beat and the key in tact and ties it all together. The bass has a beuatiful tone and although it is used for solos it isn;t really a "show off" instrument, but an essential and tbh brillinat one.

Why does a violin sound higher than a double bass?

User Avatar

Pitch is determined by the size of the instrument and the length of the string. Because the body of the violin is smaller, the strings are also shorter, allowing it to produce pitches far higher than those of the double bass.
