What conditions may be treated with an inhaled bronchodilator?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Inhaled bronchodilators are medications that help open up the airways in the lungs by relaxing the smooth muscles surrounding the bronchi and bronchioles. They are commonly used to treat conditions characterized by airway constriction or obstruction. Some of the conditions that may be treated with inhaled bronchodilators include:

Asthma: Inhaled bronchodilators are a key component in the management of asthma. They provide quick relief by relaxing the airway muscles, making it easier to breathe during an asthma attack or in response to triggers.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, is a progressive lung disease that causes airflow limitation. Bronchodilators can help alleviate symptoms such as shortness of breath, cough, and wheezing in COPD patients.

Chronic Bronchitis: This condition involves inflammation of the bronchial tubes, leading to increased mucus production and difficulty breathing. Bronchodilators can help relieve bronchial constriction and improve airflow.

Emphysema: Emphysema is characterized by the destruction of the air sacs in the lungs, leading to decreased lung elasticity and airflow obstruction. Bronchodilators can help improve breathing by relaxing the airway muscles.

Bronchiolitis: This is a condition commonly seen in infants and young children, often caused by viral infections. Inhaled bronchodilators may be used to relieve airway constriction and improve breathing in severe cases.

Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB): Some individuals experience bronchoconstriction and breathing difficulties during or after physical exertion. Inhaled bronchodilators can be used before exercise to prevent or reduce these symptoms.

Allergic Reactions: Inhaled bronchodilators may be used as part of the treatment for acute allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, to help relieve bronchoconstriction and improve airflow.

It's important to note that while inhaled bronchodilators provide rapid relief of symptoms, they do not address the underlying causes of these conditions. Other medications and management strategies, such as anti-inflammatory drugs and lifestyle modifications, may be necessary for comprehensive care. The specific type of bronchodilator prescribed (short-acting or long-acting) depends on the individual's condition and healthcare provider's recommendations. Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions and seek medical advice if you have concerns about your respiratory health.

What other things may trigger asthma in dogs?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It's important for dog owners to work closely with their veterinarian to identify specific triggers for their pet's asthma and to develop a management plan. This may include environmental modifications, medication, and lifestyle adjustments to help control and minimize asthma symptoms in dogs.

Are border collies good dogs with people who have asthma?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Whether a border collie is an appropriate dog for a person with asthma, depends on the allergens that trigger and the irritants that worsen the asthma, for that particular person. The allergens trigger the asthmatic response of inflammation, swelling and mucus production, and irritants further inflame the tissues worsening the response.

If a person is allergic to dogs, any dog in their environment will be an issue, as all dogs shed the allergy triggers of skin flakes and saliva. Dog hair is generally not an allergy trigger, it is just more visible.

If a person lives in an environment that constantly triggers their asthma, but is not allergic to dogs, they may still be irritated by the fine dander shed by the dog. If the allergens in the environment are reduced, and the asthma controlled by medication, they may then be able to tolerate a dog.

All dogs tiny flakes of skin, called dander, just as we do, as the skin replaces itself.

Dogs with long hair retain more of this shed dander and dried saliva in their hair, and can therefore at any time shed a lot of this at once.

Dogs with a skin problem, such as having an allergy themselves, or having a skin infection, will replace their skin faster and shed more dander.

Dogs that are brushed and washed often, have the dander and saliva removed during this grooming, so less tends to be shed at other times.

Dogs breeds that have been described as hypoallergenic, such as poodles and bichon frise, shed just as much dander and saliva, but are often groomed and clipped more because of their long growing hair, so they may shed less into the home environment.

Long haired dogs that are not clipped, and dogs that drool more, will be the worst dogs to have for an asthmatic who reacts to dogs, but are not going to affect an asthmatic who does not have a dog allergy.

If you have asthma should you have a cat in the house?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You can, but reduce the allergens if possible. I've owned cats my whole life and have been allergic to them and do have asthma. Ask a doctor though if your asthma is severe.

There are many ways to reduce allergens in your home and allow for you to own a cat.

1 - Keep your cats indoors only. When they go indoor and outdoor, they clean themselves more often, shed more, and bring inside outdoor allergens. Most people are actually not allergic to cat fur, but are allergic to their saliva and dander that is in their fur.
2 - Keep your cat out of the bedroom and off the furniture. While we love our furry friends to cuddle up next to us in bed, it's hours of exposure to the allergens. Cat trees or cat condos are great alternatives to them being on your furniture.
3- Keep your cat groomed. There are anti-dander shampoos that help allergies and reduce shedding. Also brushing will help.
4 - Wash your hands after petting your cat.
5 - There are awesome meds now that are specifically designed to combat pet allergies. Ask your doctor which they would recommend you use.

What does an asthma attack sound like?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

New Answer

You notice your breathing is becoming difficult. The harder you work at getting air in, the less it seems to work. You begin to panic.

Imagine you have a coffee stirrer straw, how thin it is. Now imagine you are under water and that is your air hose. It's just not enough air.

The longer this problem lasts, the more excited you become which makes your dilemma worse.

If you have your rescue inhalor (breather drugs) you can't breathe in well enough to actually get the medication into your system. Now you really, truly think you are going to die.

Others around you panic also. You can't speak but in 2-3 word sentences to tell them what is wrong or what to do to help you. You are drowning in a sea of air; it is all around you but can't get enough of it into your lungs to live.

Answer

Like you are suffocating, but slowly. What happens is the airways to the lungs become narrow and airflow is partially restricted when they become irritated. This is because they are super sensitive, more sensitive than the average persons. Two things may cause an asthma attack: 1)Airway Inflammation, 2)Bronchoconstriction. Airway inflammation is when the airways become red, swollen and narrow. Bronchoconstriction is when the muscles that encircle the airways tighten up or go into spasm. Avoid being outside too much, around pollen or any allergens, exercising excessively, smoking or any inhalants that causes nausea or is bad for your health.

Yes it is the dog has fur which is what triggers asthma The dog I have is a shih tzu, which has hair instead of fur. The only disadvantage with a dog with hair is hair grows fast and the dog will need to have his/her hair trimmed more often like ours.

Is a rabbit better than a dog for a child with asthma?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No rabbit would probably be good for someone with asthma. Rabbits, including Rex rabbits, shed every 3 months or so. Not only that, hay is a vital part of a rabbits diet, which also may aggravate any type of allergy. If your willing to still try, then yes I would recommend a Rex/Mini Rex breed.

How long does a cat with asthma live?

How does cigarette smoke cause asthma?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In the same way as any other trigger. However, there is a widely held theory that it is not so much the trigger which causes most attacks but the stress arising from the PERCEPTION that any exposure to that trigger will cause an attack. In other words, it's psychological. Tobacco Control have created the PERCEPTION that tobacco smoke is more dangerous than cyanide. One whiff and it's an instant asthma attack, or even worse a heart attack! Smoking prevalence has fallen significantly over the last few decades yet the incidence of asthma has rocketed. Work that one out!

Why do dogs get muscle spasms in the throat?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

This is sometimes a symptomatic characteristic of an allergic reaction to some food-stuffs,can also be prevalent in the event of a stroke and/or panic attacks.

It can also indicate asthma. Or the more serious conditions called COPD.

And, in some people with chronic conditions of various parts of the nervous-system, it can be set off by anything that causes muscle spasms (in both smooth and striated muscles), including certain medications (such as stimulants or even narcotics) and dehydration.

Some types of convulsive seizures include this type of spasm.

The drug Flexeril is a good treatment for striated muscle spasms. Often the most severe throat spasms include neck tightness as well as internal spasms. Spasm of the voice box (laryngospasm) can cause dysphonia (distorted voice), and spasms of the esophagus can accompany acid reflux and hiatal hernia. Hyoscyamine or Levbid is sometimes given for these, but Librax may be better for some people.

Why could mango cause asthma?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I have an asthma but it's only mild. When I added mango in my daily diet, after several weeks of eating mangoes I had asthma attacks every night. One day the fruit stand didn't have mangoes so I bought orange instead. I didn't have an asthma attack that night. Just to be sure that mangoes were causing my asthma attacks, the next day I didn't eat mangoes and as expected my asthma didn't return. Now I believe that mango is not good for asthma, and although orange has vitamin C which is good for asthma, I only ate it once so it couldn't have cured my asthma.

Do saltwater swimming pools produce the same asthma symptoms as chlorine pools do?

User Avatar

Asked by Tiffany2121

No, but you will get dehydrated, making you breath heavy.

I don't agree that you get dehydrated. The body fluids contain salt so in a plain water pool the body is taking on water because it contains salt.

The fluids prescribed for an isotonic solution to rinse the nose to keep the sinuses from either gaining or losing water would contain about 500 Gallons of salt/25,000 Gallons of water.

A salt pool uses less than 100 gallons of salt/25,000 gallons of water. So the body still absorbs water but less than with a plain water pool. So a plain water pool is more likely to cause the sinuses to swell than a salt pool.
