How do fatty acid hydrocarbon chains interact with each other within a plasma membrane or lipid bylayer?

User Avatar

Asked by CeptidonSystems

Fatty acids don't actually interact with each other. A better way to describe it is that they clump together by a "hydropobic exclusion". Interactions between hydropbobic and hydrophylic molecules are energetically unfavourable means that the fatty acid chains isolate themselves from the polar solution around them. Similarly interactions between the polar parts of the bilayer and the polar solution around them is energetically favourable.

In summary; fatty acid chains DO NOT interact with eachother. The polar solution EXCLUDES them from the outside of the bilayer.

Describe the effect of surface area and pores on cells?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Mean pore size is an essential aspect of scaffolds for tissue-engineering. If pores are too small cells cannot migrate in towards the center of the construct limiting the diffusion of nutrients and removal of waste products. Conversely, if pores are too large there is a decrease in specific surface area available limiting cell attachment. ;)

Why do organisms living in the pelagic zone below 200 meters depend on organisms living above that depth to supply their energy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Plant photosynthesis is the primary source of nutrients in every ecosystem. Deep in the ocean, where little or no sunlight is present, photosynthesis is impossible. Thus, organisms in deep water ecosystems depend on detritus (discarded waste) and other organic matter that drifts down from (and is generated) nearer to the surface, or on species that migrate back and forth.

Why egg liquid does not become steam?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When you are frying an egg, there will be some steam given off by the egg as it fries; there is also lots of protein mixed into the egg liquid which is solidifying as it fries, because of chemical changes that it undergoes when heated, unlike water which just boils.
