What is the scientific explanation of the moon's absence?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The moon doesn't always rise and set at night, sometimes it rises and sets during the day.

This is dependent on the phase of the moon.

The moon circles the earth once every 28 days.

The closer to full the moon is, the more hours it spends in the sky at night, because it is on the opposite side of the earth as the sun. That's why it is full - the sun is behind you, lighting the moon in front of you. A completely full moon will rise as the sun sets, and set as the sun rises, and will be visible all night.

The closer to "new" the moon is, the fewer hours it spends in the sky during the night, and the more time it spends during the day because it is on the SAME side of the earth as the sun. It appears "new" because the sun is behind it, lighting the far side of the moon. A completely new moon will rise and set with the sun, and will only be visible in the day.. or briefly at dusk.

A half-moon is up half the day and half the night. If you don't see a half-moon at night, it has either already set or hasn't risen yet.

What the phase that results when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When it is directly opposite, it would be a Full Moon. But the Moon spends half of its orbit on the side opposite the Sun, which includes all of the Gibbous phases from First Quarter to Last Quarter.

Why the moon appears to have different phases?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Because of its position relative to Earth and the Sun.

The Moon orbits the Earth once every 29 days.

Starting with day 1. It is a NEW Moon . Its position is in a plane between Earth and Sun. We do NOT see a New Moon, because the Sun's Light over powers it, except when that plane the Moon in , becomes a direct line between Earth Moon & Sun; then it is a Solar Eclipse.

From day 2 to 7 the Moon is moving away from the Sun's plane, so we begin to see it . During this period is a WAXING CRESCENT Moon and seen in the evening, shortly after Sunset.

At day 7 the Moon is at a right angle(90 degrees) between Earth & Sun, So we see it as a half circle , known as FIRST QUARTER ( Because it has gone a Quarter way around its orbit of Earth).

From day 8 to 14 the Moon is moving away from the Sun's plane, so we begin to see it . During this period is a WAXING GIBBOUS Moon and seen in the early night.

At day 14 or 15 the Moon is at a plane (180 degrees) This plane is Sun, Earth and Moon. So we see it as a full circle , known as FULL MOON ( Because it has gone a half way around its orbit of Earth). At this point , if the Sun Earth and Moon are in a staight line , we see a LUNAR Eclipse. The Moon is far less bright and appears as a dull red or grey colour, due to Earth's reflected light.

From day 15 to 21 the Moon is moving towards the Sun's plane, so we begin to see it . During this period is a WANING GIBBOUS Moon and seen in the late night.

At day 21 the Moon is at a right angle(90 degrees) between Earth & Sun, , but on the opposite side of the Earth. So we see it as a half circle , However, the circle is the opposite way around to the first quarter. , known as LAST QUARTER ( Because it has gone a Three Quarter way around its orbit of Earth).

From day 22 to 28 the Moon is moving towards the Sun's plane, so we begin to see it . During this period is a WANING CRESCENT Moon and seen in the early morning before sunrise.

Day 29 or 1. It is a NEW Moon . Its position is in a plane between Earth and Sun. We do NOT see a New Moon, because the Sun's Light over powers it, except when that plane the Moon in , becomes a direct line between Earth Moon & Sun; then it is a Solar Eclipse. And the process is repeated.

As an experiment , Din a darkened room, with a pin-hole of bright light, two balls, one larger than the other.

  • The pin-hole of light is the Sun , The larger ball is the Earth , and the smaller is the Moon. Place the Moon(ball) between Earth(Ball) and Sun (pin hole) and look at it from behind the Earth. . Then move the Moon to a right angled postion and loo at it from the opposite side of the Earth. . Similarly for a stright line , Sun, Earth and Moon , and finally at the opposite side of the Earth. If done well then you should see the Moon (ball) its its different phases(shadows).
  • Hope that helps!!!!!

What is the only monument on earth visible from the moon?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Nothing is directly visible from the Moon.

However, much nearer the Earth in a spaceship , the Great Wall of China is said to be visible. Also I would suggest the Afsluitdijk in the Netherlands.

It is a dike that is straight for about 30 miles, and separates the North Sea from the Ijselmeer(Zuider Zee). It would be seen from space aS A STRAIGHT LINE.

What is the definition of the light year?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The light-year is the distance light travels in a year. Since this sometimes causes confusion, please note that a light-year is a unit of distance; NOT a unit of time. A light-year is approximately 9.5 x 1012 kilometers. (A light-year is defined to be exactly 9,460,730,472,580,800 metres.)

What force keeps a moon from orbiting a planet?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The Moon is orbiting a planet; It is orbiting the Earth.

The velocity /acceleration of the Moon and the gravitational pull between Earth and Moon are in balance, so the Moon remains orbiting the Earth. Similarly the Earth and Moon , as a binary system, orbit the Sun , and the acceleration and gravitational forces are in balance. So none of us collide.
