How do you change the drum brakes on a 1992 Buick Century?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The question you ask is too involved for a proper answer. You may want to go to a car parts store, or book store, and get a repair manual for your car. They cost about $16.00 Or, go to a Public Library.

The problem is the number of small pieces of hardware that must be put back together just so. These include, besides the brake shoes: hold-down springs (2), return springs (2), star adjuster, spring for the star adjuster, wheel cylinder if removed, backing plate if removed, brake line connection if removed, self-adjuster lever, self-adjuster spring, self-adjuster connecting arm, emergency brake cable, emergency brake lever. And of course the drum, which may be rusted on. Even with a repair manual, if you have a digital camera, it's best to take a picture or two of it all before you disassemble it, to consult in reassembly.

Why won't 93 Buick Century will not start it turns over but spits and sputters and won't start?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The fuel pump relay is designed to initially give enough gas to start the engine as well as provided gas for runnining the engine. Sometimes the relay does not respond when the motor turns. In rare cases the Map Sensor may be faulty. The Map sensor is designed to detect the engine es turning and gas is needed to keep the engine running. If you remove the conncector for the map sensor the engine will start; given: you have power to the ignition coil which in turn sends power to your spark plugs and the timing is set. The map sensor is located above the power steering pump attached to the firewall and has a hose and a conncector attached to it. kind of flat and mounted upright. F. Garay

User Avatar

Remove the plastic covers around the steering column. Remove the panels by knees and feet on driver's side. You'll need a Torx bit to remove the Signal switch, follow the path and disconnect wire connectors. Retrace steps to install new switch. All in all, was pretty simple. ~Dawg

How do you change out an harmonic balancer on a 1993 Mercury Topaz?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Big job! The motor has to be lowered to get at the bolt to take it off. If you have a welder I would just notch out a square in the inner fender well to get the wrench in. Then just use a rubber peice from a floor mat to keep the water out. Other than that its a peice of cake. Take the belt off, one bolt , take it off put new one on and tighten New bolt. Big Job indeed! You have to remove the upper left motor mount while you are supporting the engine. Then you have to remove both lower engine mounting plates which are located under the radiator. Disconnect the two front stabilizer mounts when you are down there too. Remove the two plates and slowly drop the engine to where you can see the Harmonic balancer bolt. Put a 21 MM socket on it and hit it with decent impact gun removing the bolt. Next see if you have enough room to extract the pully. I did not have enough room and ended up cutting about 1/2 inch of metal from the inner wheel well. Next put on a puller and take off the pully. Mine was on very tight and I needed a good puller. Take your time it can be done and The GL on the back of the car mean Good Luck because you will need it. My car was the 3.0 v-6

I Think it gives the impression of a bad ignition module. Actually, I have this problem in Buick Regal, turned out to be the Crank Posistioning Sensor, which in my former vehicle, was very hard to change, located between oil pan and transmission. I had to take it out in pieces. Good luck!

Try checking the connection. Wires may be loose. Or maybe a bad ground from motor to chasis.
