How many people died climbing Kilimanjaro?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

According to the CIA World Factbook, as of July, 2005, there were approximately 6,446,131,400 people on the planet, and the death rate was approximately 8.78 deaths per 1,000 people a year. According to our nifty desktop calculator, that works out to roughly 56,597,034 people leaving us every year. That's about a 155,000 a day.

Still, more people are being born than dying. The population growth rate is hovering around 1.14%, which doesn't seem like much, but last year that was (back to the calculator!) 73,485,898 more mouths to feed. As the Factbook succinctly puts it: "For the 21st century, the continued exponential growth in science and technology raises both hopes (e.g., advances in medicine) and fears (e.g., development of even more lethal weapons of war)."

The legal information resource ItsMyLife.com offers some interesting mortality statistics for the United States. Of the 2,400,000-plus Americans who die each year, over 45,000 are killed in transport accidents. The number of homicides, poisonings, and drunk driving fatalities are roughly the same, at around 17,000 each. Perhaps more surprisingly, a stunning 178,000 Americans die from medical or hospital error every year.

For more details, the National Center for Health Statistics offers a free report. The United Nations also offers a 2005 World Health Report. One of its key findings: this year almost 11 million children under the age of five will die from a preventable disease.

Great answer above, pity it has nothing to do with the question. As of the 1st August 2008, 77 people have died climbing K2 or the Savage Mountain as it is known. This includes the 11 that were killed a couple of days before, when during an avalanche ice took out a section of the fixed ropes stranding 15 climbers, 4 were rescued, but the other 11 were not found.

The total number of people who have climbed K2 stands at 306 as of 1st August 2008, so the ratio of death to success stands at 1 in 4, (Everest is 1 in 10), only Annapurna has a higher death rate.

Can you climb a volcano?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. However, there are always risks of an eruption, or choking from natural gases released by the volcano in the crater. Stratovolcanoes often have unstable slopes as well, making for treacherous footing and the possibility of landslides, even if the volcano is dormant or extinct.

How cold is Kilimanjaro?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

An excerpt from the website cited below:

"The main seasonal differences are caused by the wet season which lasts from March to the end of May or early June. Clouds tend to pile up and over the summit, dropping snow on top and rain at the base. The temperatures at this time of year are relatively warm but cool down slightly in the dry season.

June and July can be very cold at night, but usually clear of clouds. These are good months to climb as the weather is stable and the mountain is quieter.

August and September are slightly warmer and can have completely clear days, but the forest and moorland are often blanketed in cloud. It is peak climbing season on the mountain.

October and November are quieter on the mountain but weather can be a bit unstable with thunderstorms building up over the mountain in the afternoons in November but this should not effect your summit attempt.

January and February are traditionally the driest months with warm clear days and brief rain showers which makes for good climbing conditions."

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The release of magma along the Great Rift Valley began volcanic eruptions between 2 and 3 million years ago. The three separate summits of Kilimanjaro represent the overlapping releases that formed the mountain. Two of the peaks are considered extinct, and the third has been dormant for about 360,000 years.
