Knights started as Pages who learned to ride horses and they did things like clean armor and washed horses for the knights. They also learned manners and how to act polite to people. They started at age 7 and lived with the knight's family. The second step was a squire; they learned how to joust and went into the battle with the knights, and they'd give them swords. The night before they became a knight, they would spend all day and all night fasting [not eating] and praying. They get dubbed with the touch of the flat part of the blade of a sword by an older knight, and they're officially knights. That is the ONLY time they're allowed to get touched with a blade by another person without fighting back. They wore chain mail as protection until armor got more advanced. Then they had more protective forms of protection in battle. They had different armor for different occasions; battles, parties, etc. They were taught to be polite to even their enemies and that they should be respectful and help everyone, I.E the poor, sick, old, women.
Well knights of Europe were soldiers but at the same time nobles. These men fought with honor died with honor and upheld to word of God the way we are meant to. They believed that women and children should be respected, and that the laws of the country should be upheld along with the laws of God. Also to be a gentleman even to their enemies. They went into battle with God on their side, whether they lived or died they would never lose morale. These men were some of the most legendary warriors. Along with the Spartan and Samurai(Japans version of the Knight).

They would have shared the space with other members of the household, servants, and sometimes guests. Some knights may have had private chambers if they were of high rank or owned their own castle.
