features? Well, the "features" of a true standard 56k modem are that it accepts and sends information in bits and packages through a phone line. DSL and Cable modems are different. They actually convert data back and forth for a higher stream range. I suggest you goto howstuffworks.com. They have an extensive area for modems and networking materials.

There are several types of modems but the primary purpose is to modulate a signal which carries data in some form. The signal is a combination of the carrier frequency and the data being sent.

Modem actually means modulator / demodulator.

In the simplest sense a modem is like a radio frequency that carries an audio signal. The signal can be either analog or digital as with a DSL modem. The purpose is to either combine the data with, or remove the data from the modulated signal. The whole purpose is to match the modulated signal with characteristics of the medium being used. When you receive a radio station there is actually a carrier frequency that is combined with the audio frequency to make the signal match the medium of air. The term FM actually means Frequency Modulated.

The difference is that a modem transmits and receives using some type of media such as cable or phone lines unlike a radio transmitter that uses air as the medium.

The ADSL modem plugs directly into the phone socket and in one box combines the wireless router and broadband modem. It also saves money since it only needs one power supply as opposed to a separate modem and router.

Can I replace my adsl modem with a modem router?

Yes you can because the modem router has a modem built in. There are different types of modem routers that suit different needs. If you are only going to be surfing the web you will need a "N" modem router, if you are going to be sharing files then you will need a "N+" modem router and if you are going to be gaming e.g. connecting to a Xbox 360 or PlayStaion 3 you will need a "N+N" modem router, I would personally recommend Belkin modem routers. Hope you find this useful!

Different types of modem?

Since this was posted under Cable Modems, I'm assuming that you are asking about the (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) cable modem which allows different cable companies and different cable modem manufactures all to adhere to a uniform set of protocols and modulation schemes to allow for inter and intra market competition. Go to Wikipedia and search DOCSIS for more information if that truly was your question.
