John Adams, the 2nd President of the United States, was the first US President to live in the White House. Having taken office in 1797, before the residence was completed, the Adams family (John Adams and his wife Abigail) could not occupy the White House until November 1, 1800.

The White House, the official/executive residence of the President of the United States, is also the President's principal workplace. Construction on the Executive Mansion, in Washington, D.C., was begun in 1792 and completed in 1800. (It was not known as the "White House" until years later, around 1811, and not formally so until 1901.) However, the first White House was mostly destroyed by a fire in 1814; it was rebuilt by 1817.

John Adams the first person who lived in the White House.

Another viewpoint

Technically Theodore Roosevelt was the first president to live in the "White House," as he was the first president to actually refer to it as the White House in, 1901. Before, it was referred to as the "Presidential Palace" or the "Executive Mansion." John Adams was the first person to live on the land that would eventually hold the White House. During the war of 1812 British forces burned the Executive Mansion, nearly to the ground, and a new one was built in its place. The first president to occupy the building, which became the White House was James Monroe.

Actually in my John Adams book it said specifically "John Adams was the first president to ever live in the white house."

The Residence Act declared that the federal government would reside in a district "not exceeding ten miles square... on the river Potomac," and was signed by President George Washington in 1790. The White House was under construction while President George Washington served in office, and because of this he never used it as his residence.

President John Adams and his wife Abigail were the first residents when they moved in November 1800, although the White House was still undergoing some final renovations. Previously they had live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the temporary capital of the United States while the White House was undergoing construction.
