For around 12 years.

* Around the year 610 CE, Mohamed, while in Mecca (presently in Saudi Arabia) began to receive Quran (holy book of Islam) revelations from God. * In 622 CE, he left Mecca with his followers (due to sufferings in Mecca and being subject to assassination plot) to a city in the north named Yathrib (later Medina), where another Muslim community had begun to grow. The date of this emigration. The year 622 CE, is the beginning year for the Muslim calendar. * Quran revelation to Prophet Mohamed continued while he is in Medina until he died in 632 CE. Note: Named Mohamed may be spelled Muhammad, Mohammad, or Mohammed. Also, Mecca may be spelled Makka or Makkah

About three years. His first interview with the angel Gabriel was in August 610. He first preached publicly in Mecca in 613.

________________________________________________________
  • Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) started preaching God (same God worshiped in Christianity and Judaism and worshiped by prophet Abraham) even before the first revelation of the first verses of Quran to him through the angel Gabriel in year 610 AD.
  • Being in the habit of periodically retreating to a cave in the surrounding mountains for several nights of seclusion and prayer, he later reported that it was there, at age 40, that he received his first revelation from God. Three years after this event Muhammad started preaching these revelations publicly, proclaiming that "God is One", that complete "surrender" to Him (called Islam) is the only religion acceptable to God, and that he himself was a prophet and messenger of God, in the same vein as other Islamic prophets since Adam and including Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.
  • However, if meant by breaching in the question praying or Salat, then Muslims were first commanded by God to perform the ritual worship of Salat on the 10th year after first Quran revelation (that is in year 620 AD)
  • Islamic tradition relates that in 620, Muhammad experienced the Isra and Mi'raj, a miraculous journey said to have occurred with the angel Gabriel in one night. In the first part of the journey, the Isra, he is said to have traveled from Mecca (or Makkah) to "the farthest mosque" (in Arabic: masjid al-aqsa), which Muslims usually identify with the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. In the second part, the Mi'raj, Muhammad is said to have been lifted to the Heavens where he had spoken with earlier prophets, such as Abraham

    , Moses

, and Jesus. It was reported by historians like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir that the journey was a physical journey. Salat or praying was commanded by God during this journey.

Is it true that prophet Mohammad was taught by christian monk?

The story goes that Bahirah, a Christian monk, saw a caravan in which Muhammad was travelling at a young age. From a long distance, Bahirah noticed that one part of the caravan was always shaded by a cloud. He knew this was one of the signs of the coming of the Last Prophet. When Muhammad's caravan came to where he was, Bahirah looked for the person at the center of that shaded area. He found Muhammad. Bahirah then found a way to see Muhammad's shoulder blades. When he found that Muhammad had a birth-mark in between his shoulder blades he knew that, in fact, this is the Final Prophet of God. So bahirah went to Muhammad's guardian and told him that "this boy will be a great person - guard him and protect him from people who may want to harm him". He never taught Muhammad. Muhammad did not know that he was to be a Prophet until the age of forty, when God called him to declare the message.
