For what reason did John Hancock sign the Declaration of Independence?

As president of the Continental Congress, John Hancock was the only delegate to sign the Declaration of Independence when it was adopted by the Congress on July 4, 1776. Congress modified the document, Hancock re-wrote it to include the revisions, signed, and distributed copies to the various colonies and the army. The other signitures came later.

∙ 10y agoContrary to rumors that he did it for attention, Hancock was simply the first to sign the document. As there were no other signatures yet, there was no frame of reference to determine how big to sign.

∙ 9y agoBecause he was the President of the Congress at the time and when the vote was reached it is the duty of the President to first sign it into action. If I may, he also signed it big because he wanted everybody to know he stood in back of the document unafraid. There is a famous quote by John Hancock at the time of the signing saying that he wanted King George to be able to see his name without his spectacles. What a brave and risky thing to do and say.

∙ 15y agoHe wanted independence from Great Britain. His signature was the largest because he wanted King George 3 to be able to see his name without having to put his glasses on. Also because he wanted to show King George and everyone else in the government to see that he was not afraid to admit that he wanted to break away from England. He was not afraid of the consequences because he was willing to give up his life for independence.
