to change the transmission in a 97you must jack up the vehicle, remove the air cleaner box,the battery and the battery tray, remove the transmission pan and drain the , put the pan back on when all of fluid has been drained, unbolt the exhaust from the manifolds, undo the bellhousing bolts, undo the shift linkage and all electrical plugins, you may want to remove the vehicle speed sensor so it doesn't become broke when the transmission is removed, remove the starter, the torque converter bolts there should be 4, undo the ball joints on both sides,remove axle nuts, then half shafts, Remove the four subframe bolts, and the two nuts on the rack and pinion then lower the subframe, tie the drivers side strut back so you can slide the transmission out. to put the transmission in do the opposite of these procedures.

i had that problem on my 92 merc sable wich is the same transmission as the taurus. they had to replace the gears inside the tranny with new ones if you are able to do that your self i suggest you do so as Ford and most mechanics are very expensive it cost me 1,250.00 bucks to do this
Remove the Ford Ranger automatic transmission drain plug. The drain plug is in the bottom of the transmission. Allow the oil to drain out and replace the plug. Fill the transmission with new transmission fluid.
