you have to simply slide it in place its a tight spot and if you dont have a lift you better be thin and have skinny fingers....
the starter is located in the back of the engine. you have to get under the vehicle in order to access the starter.
The starter for a 1999 Saturn is on top of the transmission under the air filter box. Remove the filter box for easy access.

The starter on the 2002 Saturn vue is located on the front underside of the engine, follow the positive(red) cable from the battery and it should connect to the solenoid which is part of the starter.
if its FWD then the starter is under the intake manifold and fuel rail at the bottom of the motor in the back by the firewall
Look in front of the motor,under muffler pipes,there you will find the starter motor.Take two mounting screws out and remove wire.
Disconnec battery Starter is located under car where engine meets tranny, remove the electric connectors Remove starter mounting bolts Install new starter in reverse order of removal
Disconnect the Battery Negative (black) Cable & secure away from post. Jack up car & remove under cover. Disconnect the large & the small cables from the Starter. Remove the Starter mounting bolts. Remove Starter. Installation is reverse.....
If you're talking about the older, air cooled beetles, The starter is reached from UNDER the car. Disconnect the battery, put the back of the vehicle on jack stands or ramps. Climb under and you should see the starter RIGHT BESIDE THE TRANSMISSION. Remove the wires, remove the 2 mounting bolts and the starter should fall out.
Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. Remove spare tire if under hood. Disonnect starter solenoid trigger wire. Unhook positive battery cable at starter. Remove upper and lower starter mounting bolts. Remove starter. Install in reverse order.
I just found the relay on my 1999 sc2.I have a standard tranny and I followed the wires from the clutch safety switch. My relay was up under the dash on the drivers side taped with electrical tape to the harness. Hard to see get agood flashlight. Probably at the top of starter- follow the + battery cable should connect to starter solenoid (relay)
Remove NEGATIVE battery terminal Block wheels Crawl under car and remove lead wire and two mounting bolts. Slide starter motor backwards from engine. Reverse for installation.
