Hard disk is more popular than floppy disk because hard disk can store huge amount of data in term of mega byte to giga byte. It stores the data safely compared to floppy disk. External hard disk are portable so they can transfer the data from one computer to another . But floppy disk has low capacity and are vey slow compared to hard disk . It can be easily damaged when exposed to heat and dust. Files can be easily corrupted and data transfer rate is slow compared to hard disk. Nowadays, computer are built without floppy drives which is needed to read floppy disks.

There are many advantages to using hard disks over floppy disks. Hard disks simply hold a greater amount of information, which is very important today as many files are larger than those used in the past. Hard disks are also more durable than floppy disks, floppy disks are easily destroyed by accidental bending or spills.

Hard Disks are ofcourse more durable compared to floppy disks

Hard disks store more data compared to floppy disks

In a way, Hard disks are "universal" while floppy disk drives can only be used on obselete machines

Hard disks load and store data more quickly compared to floppy disks

One more recent application for flash memory is as a replacement for hard disks. Flash memory does not have the mechanical limitations and latencies of hard drives, so a solid-state drive (SSD) is attractive when considering speed, noise, power consumption, and reliability. Flash drives are gaining traction as mobile device secondary storage devices; they are also used as substitutes for hard drives in high-performance desktop computers and some servers with RAID and SAN architectures.

There remain some aspects of flash-based SSDs that make them unattractive. The cost per gigabyte of flash memory remains significantly higher than that of hard disks.[38] Also flash memory has a finite number of P/E cycles, but this seems to be currently under control since warranties on flash-based SSDs are approaching those of current hard drives.

For relational databases or other systems that require ACID transactions, even a modest amount of Flash storage can offer vast speedups over arrays of disk drives.

In June 2006, Samsung Electronics released the first flash-memory based PCs, the Q1-SSD and Q30-SSD, both of which used 32 GB SSDs, and were at least initially available only in South Korea.

A solid-state drive was offered as an option with the first Macbook Air introduced in 2008, and from 2010 onwards, all Macbook Air laptops shipped with an SSD. Starting in late 2011, as part of Intel's Ultrabook initiative, an increasing number of ultra thin laptops are being shipped with SSDs standard.

There are also hybrid techniques such as hybrid drive and ReadyBoost that attempt to combine the advantages of both technologies, using flash as a high-speed non-volatile cache for files on the disk that are often referenced, but rarely modified, such as application and operating system executable files.

My comment.

It seems that today's solid state drives are largely superior to conventional HDD. From now on, computers will progressively have SSD as their main storage devices.

Hard drives are much more reliable and less prone to physical damage. They can also store a lot more data.

because hard disk has more capacity than floppy disk. you can use hard disk for long time but floppy disks life is short

How spins faster a hard disk or a floppy disk?

A modern hard disk will spin much faster than a floppy disk. A floppy disk will spin at around 300 RPM. A hard disk will vary depending on model and configuration. A mid range desktop hard disk will spin at around 7200RPM. Laptop hard disks usually run at slower speeds of 5400RMP. High end desktop and server hard disks can spin at speeds in excess of 10000RPM.

What is the purpose of the backup?

A d2d, also known as a disk-to-disk, is where a computer hard drive is backed up to another hard disk rather than a tape or a floppy. It allows for higher speed and higher capacity.

Differences between a floppy disk and a hard disk?

A floppy disk is a flexible and magnetic data storage system that is removable from the computer that can store up to 3 megabytes of data. A hard disk on the other hand is the main place that a computer stores data. It is a rotating disk that uses magnetic patterns to store data. Floppy disks have been replaced by USB flash drives. These days (2012) you will not find many floppy disks (although just a couple of years ago we had to order special floppy drives for a server because some software would only be installed if it booted from Drive: A a floppy). There were 8 inch and 5 inch and 31/2 inch floppy disks which were common. The latest (diskettes) were the smallest and were protected by a hard plastic casing. Inside a thin Mylar disk coated with a magnetic surface stored the 1.44 Mb that was the capacity of most diskettes. Hard disks have one or more aluminium or glass disks coated with magnetic surfaces. These hold much more information and now (2012) there are units that can store 3Tb or more.

What device is smaller than a floppy disk?

a USB

What is the difference between hard disks and floppy disks?

hard disks are generally contains within the computer and contain FAR more memory than a floppy disk does. floppy disks generally contain 1.44 mb where as hard drives are constantly developing and are currently about 1TB MAX. floppy disks are external in the same way as CD's

Give two advantages of using an encyclopedia stored on CD-rom rather than on floppy disk?

The 3.5" floppy disk is defunkt now, it is rarely if ever used, so to be able to procure one would be hard and then finding a new computer on which to use it would be difficult. If a floppy disk drive is available the volume of information that can be stored on it is minimal. A floppy disk can store around 1.44Mb wheras a conventional CD can store from 600 - 800Mb.
