I have the Surf green "Strat" and it is beautiful and plays great . ( I did have a professional "set up" performed on it for $60.00 which is recommended for ANY new guitar. There is no answer for the best guitar. The better question could be, is the guitar's sound good enough for the type of music you like and you want to produce. A splendid performance of guitar playing is much more important.

Ovation all the way , they look odd to some people with their modern looks and the plastic bowls at the bottom which enhance the sound but I played over 50 acoustics from garbage I fixed up to 1500$ or so 12 strings and I kept going back to Ovation.

the celebrity models if anything they are electric too. But don't be afraid to buy used guitars you'll save a lot of money.

Being Australian, I can only assume you mean AU$500 and that will buy you a whole selection of fine guitars. Dean is a good brand and well made, as well as a decent Fender strat. You might even be able to get a brand new Ibanez for that price, but you will have to get one of their lesser engineered models. I'm sure that if you looked around, you will get an amazing pre-loved guitar for 500.

try the gibson les paul 60's tribute with p-90 pickups for about 650 or the fender jaguar for about 750

You can get cheaper Gibson guitars for under $800, and they will always appreciate in value.

The Ibanez RG350DX is a great axe for about 350 it's one of the best in the business. I've had one for years and it is great, and it's got the looks!
