Clunking/knocking sound felt though steering wheel and floor when turning and going over bumps at low speeds.
What would cause a grinding or scratching sound when turning the steering wheel in a car that doesn't have power steering?
Check out the bearings in the steering column and the knuckles in the steering shaft
many reasons, steering pump, cv joints may be going out, or you could be grinding some plastic that goes around the wheel
most grinding noises that come from turning is usually a cv axle that needs to be replaced. Can also be a bad wheel bearing. If you hear the grinding when turning to the right then the left front wheel bearing is bad.
Have 02 Saturn SL 2 26000 mi grinding noise when turning right or left has new brakes tie rods steering rack all dealer replaced this week still makes grinding sound when turning right left?

What would cause a loud clunking noise when turning car steering wheel For example when you make a U-Turn or back out of drive-way?
Could be many things, ball joints usually make clunking noises (usually one when turning and one when turning the wheel from turning), cv joints usually make a clicking noise and vibrate under load. Have it checked out, les schwab will do it for free (check it).
It could be the ball bearings or the ball joints or the breaks but not to sure but that's what it was on mine.
It could make a grinding type noise when moving slow. A "whirrr" type whine when moving faster. The grinding noise may change to a clunking noise when turning the wheel. Any of these noises means "fix me now or else."
bad rack and pinion
If its making a horrible grinding noise, it could be the bearing!
Your 95 camaro z28 is making like a grinding almost noise when im turning the steering wheel anyone have ideas whats wrong?

What would cause a clunking or vibrating sound when tu Vibration or clunking sound in the front end which sounds like it comes from the steering wheel only while turning the vehicle?
you MIGHT put a little more effort into your question - details &H specifics never hurt. in a front wheel drive car, bad , loose CV joints clunk upon turning.
A few things could be causing a grinding sound when turning. It could be a cv axle, ball joint, tie rod end, or bracket pin steering.
The steering gear box, probably. If it's power steering, it may be coming from the pump itself. This answer could be one of many things, if the grinding only happens while you are driving. Check to make sure your power steering fluid is full. Mine has a leak and every couple weeks it starts to grind when I turn right.
the gear box may be going out or its metal on metal rubing somewhere
If there is a clunking sound when turning a vehicle, the problem might be the ball joints in the front end. The ball joints help to support the A-Frame which helps to keep the wheel on and upright.
Excluding the brakes why would a 92 Honda sometimes have a high pitch squeak when turning but not when turning the wheels when the car is stopped?
Bad wheel bearing if you are referring to a grinding noise. A squeak can be many things. Loose power steering belt for one.
Wheel bearings or u joints
Check the steering fluid reservoir - it will probably need topping up - MAKE SURE YOU USE THE CORRECT TYPE
Turning uses a knife edge to shear a piece off grinding uses a stone to abrade and break off a pieces the width of the stone turning point or line contact grinding area contact
Why is my Geo Tracker making clunking noises when driving slow and grinding and popping sounds when turning?
theres is to many things that could becausing it, so its hard to tell. the best thing to do is jack both front teires off the ground and try to wiggle the tires back and forth, there should be no play (or movement).
replace c/v joints
If the car is running at idle speed while you are turning, the power steering pump has to push a lot of fluid with little power. If it sounds like a slight creaking, then it's normal. If it is a high-pitched squeal, then the serpentine belt may need to be tightened or replaced. Either way is not that big of a deal. If it is a grinding noise and you can feel a jerking motion… Read More
You probably need your bearings repacked

Could be the rotary switch for the airbag inside the steering wheel. This was a 'recall' fix on the Scenic, so your dealer might fix it for free. Hope the guy below is joking! Sounds like the racket pinion steering. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Could be the CV joints, with window down @ low speed listen for noise coming from wheels
When turning the wheel, a clunk means a tie rod or ball joint is worn out.
loose or bad u joints.
Notchy feel when turning the steering wheel Noise from the pump area when wheels are turned Possible stiffness when turning steering wheel.
I have found the grinding noise to be caused by either the power steering pump is low in fluid or a bad power steering pump. If you have a bad habit of turning the steering wheel all the way till you can't turn it anymore it will shorten the life of the pump. The pump is located usually in a convenient place under the hood and should have a knob labeled power steering so you… Read More
A grinding noise heard when taking off and turning can be a number of different things. Depending on whether your vehicle is a front wheel drive or rear wheel drive, the source of the noise can vary. 1. If a FWD, it can be your CV (constant velocity) joints which are part of the drive shafts that drive your wheels. These CV joints allow the drive shafts to bend with steering and suspension articulation while… Read More

Try turning the steering wheel whilst turning the key, most peugeots have a built in steering lock.
CHECK THE EXHAUST.MINE WAS HITTING THE BODY AT BOTTOM OF REAR FENDER
grinding on front wheel is caused by 2 things. a bad or loose wheel bearing,or worn out brakes, have them both checked You might also want to check the level of fluid in the power steering reservoir - low or lack of fluid will also cause a noise (although more of a whining than a grinding). This can also be caused by worn or damaged central velocity joints if the vehicle is front wheel or… Read More
power steering fluid not filled?
Check the wheel bearings if it is only when you turn, you may want to check the backing plate as if it gets bent or warped, it can rub on the rotor as you turn. I had that problem, and a simple bend into shape and it was fixed.
I doubt that this problem would be exclusively limited by steering to the left. Grinding noises sounds like you may have a power steering pump that is faulty. Check your power steering resivoir for proper fluid level. If you don't know where this is it's kind of hard to explain because there are other things that look similar to it in that part under the hood. This link to a picture of it below might… Read More
I think, it might be a problem with the front Differential..
A whining noise present when turning the steering wheel indicates a faulty power steering pump. As the pump fails, it allows air to enter the system and a distinct whine.
Should the steering wheel be in the direction of the a turn when doing the turning maneuver in a vehicle?
Turning to the right, when going forward, you turn the steering wheel towards the right.
check power steering fluid level
try turning your steering wheel hard either way WHILE turning the key, sometimes the steering wheel locking mechanism interferes. you wont be able to turn your steering wheel like your actually turning, just move it and it should let the key turn
There are two possibilities when it comes to a squeaking sound when turning. The main reasons are a bad power steering pump, or a steering linkage issue.
try turning your steering wheel side to side slowly as your turning key to unlock steering... it's a theftdeterrent
Anytime I've ever heard a humming noise when turning the steering wheel on any vehicle,It has always been due to low power steering fluid
