Gunsmoke is certainly not the longest running comedy & depending on how exactly you're defining 'Drama', American/U.K./Australasian Soap Operas have lasted years or decades longer than Gunsmoke.
You have to specify 'Longest Running American Drama', since it's not THE longest running drama.
The U.K.'s medical drama, Causality has aired since 1986 and continues today (01|01|15) as well as Germany's police drama, Tatort has aired since 1970 & Japan's historical drama, Zenigata Heiji has aired since 1952 both of which are apparently still on the air today.
There was also a teen drama from the U.K., Grange Hillthat aired for 30 years.
Having said all that, the answer to the question of 'what was the second longest running drama' & presuming you're strictly speaking of American shows, the answer appears to be Lassie if soap operas are excluded & if we're not counting the fact Gunsmoke and Law & Order are tied for the longest running American drama.
