At the end of World War II and immediately after, the Soviet Union's activities in Central and Eastern Europe (apart from defeating the remaining Axis resistance) primarily consisted of occupying as much territory as possible and establishing pro-Soviet governments as rapidly as they could organize them. The intent here was a simple one: to ensure Soviet dominance of Europe in the post-war world.
