Sounds like you had an interference engine. There should be an implied warranty at the very least if not written on work performed, but they of course will try to pass the buck on the parts manufacturer. i would try to reach an agreement with shop owner, they can repair with another brand and pursue recourse with parts man to recove their labor and keep you as a customer or you can pay to have it done elsewhere and take them to small claims on the bill. Let them choose.
