There is also an unverified legend that Franklin Piece ran down a woman either in his carriage or while on horseback and was subsequently arrested.

∙ 14y agoThe only one I could find that was actually arrested while in the White House (not before or after) was President Grant. Although not common knowledge, Grant seemed incapable of driving his buggy at a safe speed. At least twice while in command of the Union Army, Grant was fined $5 for driving unsafely and excessive speeding. Once in the White House his driving improved very little. He was stopped by a uniformed policeman only after the cop grabbed the harness on Grant's horse and was drug 50 feet. Realizing he had stopped the President, the officer was prepared to let him go. Grant wouldn't hear of it. So Grant was arrested and his horse and buggy were impounded for a time. Eventually, all charges were dropped.
