The first and only woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director was Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2009.

There have been four other women nominated in this category: Lina Wertmüller in 1976 (Seven Beauties), Jane Campion in 1993 (The Piano), Sofia Coppola in 2003 (Lost in Translation), and Greta Gerwig in 2017 (Lady Bird).

In the Academy Awards' 92-year history, only five women have ever been nominated for Best Director, and only one Kathryn Bigelow has ever won.

Katryn Bigelow. She defeated her ex James Cameron for Director.
