The earth has been warmer than this in the past, but before humans existed. Changes of temperature in earth's history have taken thousands and thousands of years to change. The global warming we have now, that has seen a speedy rise in temperature over 200 years, has never happened before.

A number of things affect climate change. One is the amount of sunlight that falls on the earth. The earth has three different motions as it orbits the sun. The northern hemisphere received the minimum amount of sunlight it can possibly receive some 200,000 years ago. At that point the last ice age was at its maximum. Some 12,000 years ago, the northern hemisphere received the maximum amount of sunlight it can receive. At that point it was several degrees Celsius warmer than it is today. From time to time large volcanoes erupt and put a lot of particles into the stratosphere. They block out a lot of sunlight cooling the earth. A long fence exists in Australia keeping wild animals on one side and farms on the other side. A picture showed no clouds over the farms but many clouds over the wilderness. Thus, agriculture has caused climate change. As continents drift, they change wind flow patterns. That changes how the weather acts.

The climate changes constantly. It always has and always will. It is the nature of out Earth.

Just a note about the "long fence" and no clouds on one side and not the other....it was Photoshopped by environmentalists trying to prove a point that backfired in their faces.

Yes, the earth's climate is constantly changing, but in the past it has always happened slowly, like over thousands of years, for example, from the last Ice Age till now. The present climate change has happened extremely fast, in the past twenty or thirty years. This is why it is such a worry!

A:Yes, the planet has always had changes and will always have changes with or without humans. The current warming cycle that we are in has lasted around 10,000 years and has seen over 11 degrees C of warming. This is the 5th cycle like this we have data on.

These cycles have been observed best through the glacial samples from Vostok. Through these cycles we have determined that warming happens roughly every 110K years, like we see now because our orbit is pulled into a fairly non circular orbit due to the gravity f other planets. We are at a zenith of the current cycle and you will notice that all other major planets in our solar system are on the same side of the sun. This causes the Northern Hemisphere to warm during the winter months while the Southern Hemisphere cools slightly. The effect is most noticeable at our poles where we see a slight decrease in overall ice in the Arctic and a slight increase overall in the Antarctic. The overall trend during these Milankovich cycles is upwards, followed by an increase in CO2. These trends reverse as the planets separate.

Earth has often experienced climate change in the past, but the changes occurred over periods of many centuries, allowing species time to evolve or adapt. The present phase of anthropogenic climate change is occurring so rapidly that many species are at risk of extinction in the wild.

Previous climate change episodes never resulted in measurable economic loss, apart from displacement of populations in the Ice Ages, but the potential effect of the present episode is not only to cause new displacements of population to cause enormous damage to property, loss of livelihoods and increased insurance premiums.

We began burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). This releases carbon dioxide that has been hidden underground for millions of years. This is EXTRA to the natural carbon cycle that moves carbon dioxide in and out of the atmosphere.

Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that traps the sun's heat. Extra greenhouse gas means more warming, all over the world. This is global warming. Global warming is causing changes in the climate, climate change.

Yes. It has been much warmer and much colder than the present. The science of climate change is far from setled, and many top scientists refute man made global warming.

What is climate change global warming causing?

"Climate Change" and "Global Warming" are not the same, though related. Global Warming causes Climate Change. With Global Warming we understand the warming of the earth's global temperature. That warming has in turn an effect on the earth's global climate and on more localized climates (like the climate of England or Western US).
