Until about 1830 most countries did not have many prisons suitable for long-stay jail sentences. In many countries fines and whippings were the most common form of punishment. Britain used to send people convicted of serious crimes on a one-way ticket to Australia ... The death sentence was used much more widely than now. Prison for more than about six months was for "important persons" only.
