There have been many tornadoes in Ohio. Here are some of the major ones:

  • The Sandusky-Lorain tornado of June 28, 1924: This F4 tornado killed at least 85 people in Lorain, Sandusky, and surrounding areas. As many as 39 others, reported as missing, may have been killed in boats on Lake Erie. This was by far the deadliest tornado in Ohio history.
  • The Toledo tornado of April 11, 1965: Part of the devastating Palm Sunday outbreak, this F4 (almost F5) tornado devastated the north side of Toledo, killing 16 people. Two others were killed in Michigan.
  • The Pittsfield-Strongsville tornado of April 11, 1965: Also part of the Palm Sunday outbreak, this F4 (possibly F5) tornado destroyed most of Pittsfield near the start of its track and then moved through Grafton where damage was significant, but not devastating. Homes were completely obliterated in Strongsville, 10 miles from downtown Cleveland. This tornado killed 18 people.
  • The Xenia tornado of April 3, 1974: This F5 tornado was the deadliest and most destructive of the 1974 Super Outbreak. The tornado tore a swath of sporadic destruction through Xenia, killing 32 people and injuring more than 1,100.
  • The Niles-Wheatland tornado of May 31, 1985: This F5 tornado tore a swath of devastation through Newton Falls and Niles in Ohio before crossing the state line and devstating Hermitage and Wheatland in Pennsylvania. F5 damage ocurred in both states. There 18 deaths overall.
