Yes. They had great tactical value in wiping out pockets of the enemy. The only problem was that the range of a flamethrower was no more that 40 yards so the men using them had to be proceeded by a barrage of gunfire to protect the men so they could get close enough to use them.

You need to be flamethrower equipped in order to use one. You can't just push a button and it appears out of no where.
